Eyelid Rejuvenation (Blepharoplasty)
The eyelids often reveal the first noticeable signs of aging. As we get older, excess skin accumulates, the muscles around the eye weaken and puffiness develops from protruding orbital fat. The end result is a tired and older appearance. Eyelid rejuvenation (blepharoplasty) involves the removal of redundant skin, tightening of eyelid muscles and the repositioning or excision of excess fat. The effect is the restoration of a more youthful and rested appearance.

The Surgery
Eyelid rejuvenation involves placement of fine incisions within the natural crease of the upper eyelids and immediately below the lashes of the lower lids. Precise placement of these incisions and the delicate nature of eyelid skin results in scars that are virtually imperceptible. Eyelid rejuvenation is usually performed as an outpatient procedure in a fully accredited surgery center. Anesthesia is administered by a Board Certified Anesthesiologist.
After Surgery
Following surgery you are cared for by a registered nurse in the surgery center recovery room. Once you are fully awake a friend or relative may take you home. The incisions are covered only with antibiotic ointment and icepacks are applied. Dr. Ruhge recommends you sleep with your head elevated and use icepacks for 48 hours to help reduce swelling. Sutures will be removed six days after surgery. Make-up can be applied after two weeks. You are seen at frequent intervals during the first few weeks and months following surgery to ensure proper healing. Swelling and bruising usually resolve within two weeks. Dr. Ruhge recommends allowing two weeks for recovery before returning to work. You may begin light exercise after three weeks and strenuous exercise after five weeks. The final look after eyelid rejuvenation is seen typically after two months.
